Reasons To Send a Galentine’s Day Card
“Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home and we just come and kick it, breakfast style,” Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope says in an episode of Parks & Rec titled Galentine’s Day. The episode from the popular TV comedy aired in 2010 and was soon trending on Twitter in 2011. What was once a fictional holiday is now a widely recognized celebration for friends!
Valentine’s Day, however, dates back to the Middle Ages when suitors would sing or recite a romantic verse to their loved one. Cards for the holiday popular in the 1500s in Europe, and sending cards in the mail was favored by 1840. But, why February? In the Middle Ages, February was the month that birds chose their mates, thus creating that connection to romance. Now, Valentine’s Day cards are mailed in droves of 1 billion cards per year (coming in second only to Christmas’ 2.5 billion, of course).
Friendsgiving is to Thanksgiving as Galentine’s Day is to Valentine’s Day (Oh! I get it now!)
The idea for Galentine’s Day is simple! Valentine’s Day traditionally celebrated your loved one, and Galentine’s Day was created to celebrate the special bond shared amongst friends. (Don’t worry – you don’t have to be a gal or single to celebrate the holiday!) Celebrated on February 13th, it’s a day to honor your friendships and shower your besties with love! People enjoy the excuse to gather their friends and shower them with cards, chocolates, or a boozy brunch.
But, why send a Galentine’s Day card instead of a Valentine’s Day one?
- Exchanging Valentine’s Day cards is a long-time tradition in schools across America. Who doesn’t miss those little Valentine’s Day cards that had our favorite cartoon accompanied by a lollipop? Now, imagine starting a new tradition where adults remind their friends just how much they mean to them! Our THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND card will surely put a smile on their face! It will also bring back the nostalgia of the heart-filled holiday.
- Let someone know you were thinking of them! Some of your friends have been in your life longer than your significant other. Many of them have seen you through some good and bad moments. We get it – time gets in the way. We have so many work, family, and life obligations that it’s hard to keep in touch with all of our friends as well. It’s good to keep all of your relationships fresh, even if that means sending a Friendship card like CHULA, CHISMOSA, A LITTLE BIT OF CHILLONA – PERO, FULL OF CORAZON in the mail so that your friends know they were on your mind.
- Galentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate and convey your love, appreciation and thanks! Over the years, friends become the family that we choose. They stay up all night listening to our gossip. They help us study for a test when we’re really behind in math. Thank your friends for all they did over the years and remind them how valued they are in your life. A Madison Park Greetings card like YOU ARE THE STRAW TO MY BERRY is a great, simple way to express your love.
- Okay – It’s 2021 – Romantic love isn’t the only love in the world! Just because Valentine’s Day started out in the Middle Ages over romance doesn’t mean we can’t change it up! It’s about time there’s a day to share our friendship loves! (And it only took a fictional character to realize this!) HOW DO I LOVE THEE? is a sweet opportunity to share your love in a more poetic fashion!
So, whether you celebrate on Valentine’s Day or Galentine’s Day, make sure to let all the loved ones in your life know how special they are. Browse our diverse selection of Friendship cards and remind your gals how much you love them! (Because who doesn’t enjoy an excuse to get brunch?)
